More than 18 months in development and the day is finally here: announcing the launch of Carnival – Kate & Kate’s Winter 17 Collection, designed in collaboration with Sydney interior design house Arent&Pyke.
The collection was officially launched through The Design Files on Valentine’s Day. Forget the red roses, this is what we were really after! Read the full article here or have a peek at our interview responses below.
HOW DID YOU ALL GET TOGETHER FOR THE COLLECTION?
I had read in an interview that Sarah-Jane had a strong interest in textiles, so we decided to email the girls to see if they would ever be interested in a collaboration. The proposal was completely out of the blue and we never thought they would say yes. We have been long time admirers of the Arent&Pyke style and (in true fan girl fashion) had sent two blankets to Juliette for her twin girls a couple of years ago, so we were lucky that she knew our brand and our product. When we first got together, it was as if the stars aligned – we had a very similar vision for the collection, so the process from start to end was an absolute joy.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT OR STORY THAT INSPIRED THE CONCEPT FOR THE CARNIVAL COLLECTION?
Not one in particular, it was more of the mood that came about with us working as a team. Carnival captures the joy of gathering together, which was really the starting point for the collaboration. The collection then developed and really became a celebration of celebrations, both jovial and nostalgic.
HOW DOES THE NAME CONNECT WITH YOUR VISION FOR THIS COLLECTION?
There is real joy to this collection, so Carnival seemed like the perfect fit. We had real fun with the product names too, again making reference to the celebratory theme, with a hint of nostalgia – Pom Pom, Floss, Harlequin, Jester.
WHERE ARE THE PIECES MANUFACTURED, AND ARE ANY SPECIAL MATERIALS OR PROCESSES INVOLVED?
All of our cotton and linen pieces are manufactured in India, just outside of Delhi. We used the Kate & Kate manufacturers, as we have absolute faith in the quality of textiles they produce. The Floss Throw is hand woven in the south of India by a collective dedicated to the preservation of this art form. Our Alpaca Blankets are produced using Australian wool in South Africa.
HOW LONG WAS THE COLLECTION IN DEVELOPMENT FOR?
Our initial meeting took place more than 18 months ago now, so the collaboration has been quite a long time in development, but it allowed us the space to sample and re-sample to ensure we got everything just right. It also allowed us breathing space when editing the collection, which was the hardest part of it – we wanted to run everything!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVE PIECE FROM THE COLLECTION?
My favourite piece in the collection is the black and white Pom Pom Linen Throw. The hand painted design is just incredible. Every time I look at it, I see something different. I will be hanging this as artwork at home as soon as I can get my hands on one. The Fireworks design in the Linen Cushion is pretty amazing too. I’ve already stolen one sample and it’s on my couch as we speak.
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT TO OTHER OFFERINGS FROM K&K?
The collection is an absolute celebration of the Arent&Pyke style – both in colour and texture – whilst still very much in the Kate & Kate aesthetic. Sarah-Jane and Juliette definitely pushed us to explore new areas of colour, but their eye is just so spot on. Look at the navy/indigo combination in the Harlequin Classic Blanket and the green in the Joey Leather Cushion. I think they’ve encouraged us to really push colour wise in future collections.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS SOME TRENDS IN YOUR FIELD FOR WINTER 2017?
Winter 17, as most winters are, will be all about texture. Look out for beautiful cottons, wools, leather and linen. Details become all the more important in Winter and, as the mass market items can get a certain look, they can’t get the finishing touches we’ll be lusting after – think about blankets finished with contrast hand stitches or hand-woven throws with raw edging. Rich textures and colours will dominate this season and people will become more brave as we move on (just a little…) from our love of Scandi minimalism. Optimism and wit will prevail.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR K&K / WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO?
So much to look forward to. We are currently working on our Summer 17/18 collection – which should be completed by now, but we are running a little behind! The process so far has been great though, lots of designing together which inevitably leads to some kind of food/rosè combination happening (for inspiration, of course). We are dying to produce an enormous beach blanket as part of this collection and are working with an amazing creative to make this happen. Stand by. Let’s hope we can turn it around by August!
